How to Choose a Good Office Plant

Anyone who keeps houseplants knows that indoor foliage can brighten a dull, dreary atmosphere and create a refuge from everyday stresses. Plants can also remove common toxins from indoor environments and add oxygen to stale air. Given these benefits, you'd think that indoor plants would be as common in offices as staplers and annoying coworkers!
Sadly, most of us know only two kinds of office plants: the silk ones and those dusty brown fire hazards on top of the filing cabinet. While many of these leafy casualties could have been saved with proper care, it's critical to choose plants that can thrive in the challenging office biome. With a little forethought, you can choose the perfect plant to improve your workplace's aesthetics and your health.

Steps

Assess your office lighting. Obviously, a plant that needs full sun doesn't have much of a chance in a windowless copy room, but figure out where you can put plants in your office and determine how much natural sunlight they'll get on average. However, when in doubt, low light (shade loving) plants will do fine in most office settings (such as the top of a cubicle in the center of the floor, away from the windows). Some plants will do well if placed near the fluorescent lights in the office. If you have access to untinted south-facing windows, you'll have more flexibility in choosing plants.
Decide how much space will be designated for the plant. Get an idea both of the floor or counter space and the vertical space available.
Estimate how much care you'll be able to devote to the plant. Some plants require more maintenance than others, and sometimes it can be difficult to find time in the workday to water or prune them. Be honest with yourself in appraising how much attention you and your coworkers can give to the plant(s).
Determine the purpose of your plants. Different plants can do different things for you. If you mainly want to brighten a space, you'll probably want a flowering plant or one with colorful, variegated leaves. If you're looking to remove as much carbon dioxide--or add as much oxygen--as possible, you should look for a green plant with a lot of leaf area. Certain plants, such as the Areca palm, Kentia palm or Dracaena 'Janet Craig' are exceptionally effective at removing airborne chemicals commonly found in offices[1].
Set your plant budget. While some plants can be very expensive individually, the more plants you plan to own, the more important your budget will be. Figure out how much you want to spend purchasing the plants. Also figure out how much effort you can put into their long-term maintenance.
Research plants. Once you have your specifications, you can take them to your local garden store and ask a professional to suggest some plants that might work. You can also research plants on the internet to determine which will match your needs. Remember to think about the long term (sure, that little umbrella tree (Schefflera arboricola) will fit on top of your desk now, but what happens when it's full-grown?).
Some plants (like many orchids and bonsai) have very specific light, humidity, and temperature needs. If this is your first office plant, try something easier (like philodendron or pothos).
Purchase your plants. You can buy from your local garden store or farmers' market, or you can do your shopping online. Whichever you choose, make sure you get healthy-looking plants that are free of mold, rot and pests. This is easier to do if you can see the plants, of course, but many online stores will offer you a guarantee to offset the risk. If you have the budget you can try an office plants company.

Tips

Shop around as much as possible, especially if you're buying a large quantity of plants. You'll be able to find the best prices this way, but you'll also be able to get a variety of opinions on which plants to choose. Large hardware-store chains may seem like a bargain, for instance, but you're likely to find better advice (and often healthier plants) at your local nursery or farmers' market.
Many office plants grow well from cuttings. Take cuttings from plants in other offices or your even that cool plant in your neighbors yard. Once you put your cutting into water, it can take from one week to six months to root. Plants that do well from cuttings root quickly, while others can be more difficult, and some will not root at all.
Consider organizing your coworkers to care for all the plants. If you have a lot of plants in your office, it can be difficult for one person to keep up with them. If, however, several people take turns watering and trimming each week, you'll be able to provide more reliable care without too much effort. You'll also build workplace camaraderie.
Want to buy plants, but don't have a lot of money to spend? Consider asking your employer to budget for office flora. Studies show that plants increase employee productivity and health, so it's a worthwhile benefit for everyone involved.
Go for variety - lot's of colours brighten up the office. It's true that some plants simply can't be grown in the office, but you still have a world of choices. By following the guidelines above for finding the perfect plant for each space, you're likely to get a good variety of foliage in your workplace.
Check the soil before you water the plant. Most plants die from over-watering rather than under-watering. Too much love can kill your plants, so stick your finger in the dirt before you water to see if it's already moist. Most plants (with the exception of succulants like Jade Plants or "hens -n- chicks") need water about once a week. Succulants need water about once a month. The rule of thumb is that the thicker the leaves, the more water they will hold and the less often the plant will require water. Thin leaves and plants in bloom (African Violets) need more frequent watering. Use room temperature water and don't let it drip on the floor. Empty the dish you have placed under the plant to prevent spillage after the plant has drained. A good flushing once a month will keep mineral deposits from poisoning your plants.

Warnings

Check your building's policies on having plants in the workplace. While most would be happy to have some foliage, some businesses can be quite inflexible about allowing these things, because of fire codes and other policies.
Some plants can aggravate allergies. A plant professional should be able to help you avoid these, but you may also end up needing to exchange one kind of plant for another if your co-workers have adverse reactions.
In the unlikely event that you have animals in your workplace, exercise special care to choose plants that are not poisonous to them. Some of the very best indoor plants—dieffenbachia, for example—can kill small animals. Even common plants, such as mistletoe, are dangerous to dogs.
Take good care of your office plants. Not only are unhealthy plants an eyesore, but they can also be hazardous to your health. Molds that attack plants, for example, can cause respiratory problems in humans.
Be sure the office plant does not have an offensive odor. Some plants which look quite beautiful in bloom can have an odor that is quite pungent that many people might find offensive or otherwise bothersome. Also, some people might be extra sensitive to strong smells or even allergic to a particular plant.
If you decide to buy a cactus, make sure that you put it somewhere where it is not a hazard to your skin.

just recieved a letter from HDB asking my parent to pay $10k++ of the loan (if not we gonna move to a smaller house soon) as both my parent's CPF had ady used up. It gonna be a tough challenge for me after i grad next yr feb09. I can't go uni and be like anybody else (not that soon)... i have to work and work to pay the $10k and other debts for my parents.

sometimes i just hope that my brother and sis in law can help out even more in our family so that i dun have that heavy burden. sometimes i just hope my sister can get a job soon so that i dun have such headach. but... my sister won't be able to work and my brother won't be able to help.

Finally its all over, 3 weeks of more then 12 hours of work daily, serving and coordinating. It might sound boring but i really had lots of fun throughout. I really miss it a lot now. Just like how i miss the fun after the 2 weeks mooncake event. Learn lot of stuffs and i never regret spent my holiday working.

I started to drink red wine almost everyday during the whole event. Haha, i drank 4 glasses of red wine initially, ended feeling giddy. Not 'drunk' but 'giddy' because i am still conscious at that point of time.. Hehe...

It was the first F1 night race and it's also wee hao's birthday. We choose a place near the race route to celebrate his birthday. Haha..... 50% wanna see the race, 50% celebrating his brithday. Haha...

We were waiting for him since 5pm at Swenson. While waiting, we were enjoying the loud noise created by the F1 cars. The whole night was so cool and whole world were looking at Singapore and I don't think people will think that Singapore is part of China anymore. Haha...

Milk Charity Dinner @ Shangri La

Last min called to work at the backstage for the Milk Charity Dinner. The MILK Dinner 2008 held at Shangri-La Hotel, Singapore. The dinner is sponsored again this year by Sincere Watch Limited and the Shangri-La Hotels & Resorts.

GOH are the ministers, accompany by celebrities and many many rich man/wife. All having dinner together and the main program is the auctioning to raise fund for the 'MILK fund'.

Kit Chen sang a song at the later part. Was so shock to see her at backstage and it was my first time face to face with her and she is so gorgeous. Was too shy to ask to take a photo with her but before she left, she gave all of us an 'individual smiles'. Haha..

We spent our precious day and night for this boy's birthday, oh... i should say 'man'. First we went to HK cafe for our lunch and sing song with durain birthday cake, lucky you.... follow by bowling at marina sq and dinner at Bugis, steam boat. Had lots of fun with my lovely Malaysian cum Indonesia group. Haha.... Today we invited a special guest, Ah Yee.... Don't look down on this girl, she actually beat me in the bowling... Haha.... Another 30 over baby molly born yesterday, they are all so small and so cute!!! Now together with another 10 over '2 months old molly and two mother molly, i have a total of over 50 molly!!!

Take a look at the center of the tank, lots of snail eggs were stick on the tank waiting to be hatched. That makes good food for my baby molly.. ;p

Can you see the baby molly in the picture? You should be able to differential between a 2 month old molly and a 1 day old molly....

Spent my Saturday giving out flyers at Tangs orchard. It was raining and not much crowds. I think it was one of the boring Saturday i had. The same thing happened on Sunday, was at Orchard mugging for my coming papers and it was the first time i see Sunday with so little people at orchard.

It was so fun in NUS. 8 of us were having fun asking around people to write profile card and take poloride. NUS biz students are quite sporting, haha. There are lots of pretty girls and we took lots of polorides with them. Each profile card written entitled for one lucky draw, and one poloride taken will entited for another lucky draw too.. Haha...

Too bad, were busy during the two days and unable to take pictures.

I promised to help my friend everyday from 29th to 14th sept as he will not be in town, but will try to ask for a few days off, if not i gonna miss lots of stuff organized by my friends and will soon get sick.

The reason for working as much as possible is because i have to prepare for my allowance for my final semester in Singapore Poly. Final semester will be a busy semester as we got to focus on final year project. So this is the only time for me to earn as much as possible. I got to pay for parent insurance, mother's phone bill, my phone bill, internet bill, installments, transportation, allowance etc... I cant blame anyone for giving me such a big burden. This is Singapore. We are trained to be like that. Money Money Money, earn earn earn... Sometimes i envy those people who don't have to work and no worries... :<

But i am blessed because Lee Kuan Yew and Tay Eng Soon paid for my school fees, if not i don't think i will be studying in SP now.

I bought a new shelter for my molly mother and father. Hoping them to give birth to another 30 molly baby. lol... I feel so relaxing looking at them and they are growing bigger and bigger each day. I starts to worry on how my small tank can accommodate 30 over big molly.

Liao Hui received the latest gold for China today in weight lifting event (69kg). China is weak in Swimming as well as Athletics. And the worst thing is, both swimming and Athletics carried the most number of Golds, 34 & 47 respectively. Anyway, all the best to China. Opps... i should say all the best for Asia team. ;p Let Asian shine!!! (sound familiar?)...

Redken hair workshop

Kiehl's and me went for Redken hair workshop today at shaw tower. Quite an interesting workshop and we received 'complimentary' shampoo and conditional.. Haha...

There was an auction carried on bidding 'colouring of hair' starting for $20. I was so thick skin telling people that it's mine and not to bid after my first bid. Haha, that's why i won the bidding for just $25. So worth it...

I bought the hair matt for $28.80 after 20% discount. Decided to get it because my Gatsby wax gonna finish soon and Redken's matt can easily wash off with water. Hope i don't regret buying it.

Would like to thanks Raymond, the brand manager for conducting the workshop. I gained lots of knowledge after the workshop... ;p After the workshop, we went to dinner at Far East and game at TCC... We lose the game and have to do forfeit. :<

I just seen an article saying that Singapore and China were the most hated country, I didn't read much but i just feel that they are just jealous of certain things and that's why they gave such comment.

Kiehl's boys in action again! Friday to Sunday 12pm to 8pm outside Tangs Orchard. Kiehl's rent a van and parked it outside Tangs. 8 kiehl's boys then starts promoting our new product as well as the correct steps on how you wash your face. 1st, cleanse, 2nd, toner, 3rd, moisturizer. The same tactic, people can recieved a set of complimentary sample from us as well as complimentary consutation and even complimentary polorides. Haha...

We were giving out apples during the first two days. And why are we giving way apple? Oh... it's becasue Kiehl's came from New York and new York are often called the 'Big Apple'.

I bought the above spring field tees 2 months ago. You may say me crazy for buying same design different colours, but i do not mind as the fitting is very the 'RON'. Haha... I feel very comfortable wearing their tee... That's why i bought 3 different colours.

And yesterday... When poh poh, maybel & me were looking for berry's present, we passed by spring field, and ... i saw their new collection... Haha.. so i bought 4 different colours this time. The price of each tee is $26 plus... is quite ok! for a tee that i likes so much. So guys, please don't buy the same tee as mine... ;p

I also likes plain tee from fourskin @ heeren as the fitting is similar to spring field but no quality(But their plain tee is $10++ so is ok). I am quite a boring person that's why i prefer those plain tee without much design. When choosing a right tee, i will first look at the design; secondly, i will check the fitting; thirdly, the price... Haha.... I won't buy a plain tee for a price of more then $28.

All of them are orange in colour, oh ya.. their parents are both orange colour, haha.. I am so excited this morning as i saw many baby mollies in my fish tank when i woke up... Haha... My 2 males and 1 female mollies are round in shape (as u can see in the picture), but i wonder why their kids are not round too.. From now on, i will spend half an hour every night looking at them...

Scientific name: Poecilia latipinna

Family: Poeciliidae

Origin: Gulf of Mexico

Maximum size: 2.5 inches

Minimum Tank Size: 10 gallons

Care: An easy fish for beginners. Leave open space at the top of the tank since these fish seem to be more top dwelling then anything else. Tank should have many hiding places but these spaces are more for fry then the adults. Keep 1 male for every 2 females. These fish come in a variety of colors and are very attractive in large numbers. Colors include but are not limited to pearl, dalmation, sunset, black, bronze, and marble. There are also lyretail balloon molly and sailfin balloon molly varieties. House with other peaceful community fish such as tetras, gourami, and other livebearers.

Feeding: Tropical flake, frozen, live, and freezedried foods are accepted. Very big eaters!

Sexing: Since these are big bellied fish it is sometimes hard to tell males from females. Females have a square stomach while males are more rounded. Also look for a pointed anal fin in males called a gonopodium. Females anal fins are rounded and resemble a fan.

Breeding: Just add water . These fish give birth to live young. Justation period for these fish is 50-60 days. Females can store sperm for long periods of time so even if you have no males in your tank your females still might continue to give birth every 2 months or so. Fry are easily raised on crushed flake food.

Comments: Since these fish are highly inbred the life expectancy is only a year to a year and a half. Fry also grow slower and are not of a sellable size until 6-8 months of age.

Ghost Month (鬼月)

It's 1st August and our Ghost Month (鬼月) starts . The opening of the gates of Hell, permitting all ghosts to receive food and drink.

Just so unlucky, forgotten about the ghost month and i still came back home so late just now. I went to watch The Mummy with kiehl's boys and the movie turned out to be a rather comedy show, not really worth watching... Hehe...

Along the way home, i see not many people offering food, burn incense and joss paper. Not like before where you can see lots of people offered joss paper and food on the first night. I wonder what will happened if one day everyone just stopped doing it. Haha..

It was 12.15am when i reached my block. From a far distance, i saw a guy waiting for lift. I was like quickly walk towards the lift and hoping to take the lift with him (haha.... i am not scare, just in case only). But he is not kind and friendly at all, he don't even wait for me and i have to take the lift myself. (Maybe he is more scare then me, haha)

Our supervisor is getting more and more demanding and asked us to do something not within our capabilities. We had rush out the 2nd stage of the hand yesterday. We had modified the motors arrangement so to minimize the space available. We have to make sure the total weight of the hand will not exceed 10kg. if not the 1st degree of freedom motor will not be able to carry the whole hand up (this is the most difficult part).

Our supervisor is not very pleased with the 2nd stage of hand we made. He said it doesn't look like a human hand. And we got to recreate and redesign another hand that looks like a normal hand.

Today did my Digital Signal Processing lab test paper. The paper is very eazy, haha... think can get 100 marks for that paper. Count down one month to final exam from now...

We went to Meritus Mandarin, Chatterbox for dinner. Too bad, i ate too full just now at park mall, so i just had salads and a mango pudding. It's my first time going up so high @ orchard (38th floor). On top, I can even see the construction at IR marina bay. William had the famous chicken rice but it taste the same at those normal selling in coffee shop. Haha... But alright lah, we pay for the environment...

Final Year Project

Our project is divided into 3 parts; Vision, I-Limp & I-Touch.

Me and another friend with be in charge of building a robot hand (I-Limp). Just drew a rough of how our robot's hand going to be look like. It will have 5 fingers, 3 big motors, 15 small motors and it going to be function like a human's hand. We really doubt our ability as it's our first time building this kind of structure. No trainers are there to help us and we have to depend on ourselves. Anyway, just hope for the best!!!

'CORRECT WAY OF COOKING NOODLES'

The correct way to cook instant noodles without harming our bodies and health. Normally, how we cook the instant noodles is to put the noodles into a pot with water, throw in the powder and let it cook for around 3 minutes and then it's ready to eat.

This is the WRONG method of cooking the instant noodles.

By doing this, when we actually boil the ingredients in the powder, normally with MSG, it will change the molecular structures of the MSG causing it to be toxic.

The other thing that you may or may not realize is that, the noodles are coated with wax and it will take around 4 to 5 days for the body to excrete the wax after you have taken the noodles.

CORRECT METHOD :

1. boil the noodles in a pot with water.
2. once the noodles is cooked, take out the noodles, and throw away the
water which contains wax.
3. boil another pot of water till boiling and put the noodles into the hot
boiling water and then shut the fire.
4. only at this stage when the fire is off, and while the water is very hot,
put the ingredient with the powder into the water, to make noodle soup.
5. however, if you need dry noodles, take out the noodles and add the
ingredient with the powder and toss it to get dry noodles.

Been busy with my final year project recently. It's our holiday now and yet we still have to go back school rush for the robot arm.
Up to date, we 0nly manage to control 3 fingers. Got to finish a robotic arm which can function like a human arm by July. The schedule is a bit packed, and i really hope that we can finish by July...

Henderson Wave Bridge

Henderson Waves – Singapore’s highest pedestrian bridge - spans Henderson Road to connect Mount Faber Park to Telok Blangah Hill Park. The wave-forms will be lit with attractive LED light from 7pm to 2am daily, giving the bridge an illuminative glow.

Getting to Henderson Waves:
By Bus:	take bus service number 131, 145, 176 or 648 alight at bus stop along Henderson Road, take the staircase up to Mount Faber Park.
By Car:	Parking is available at Mount Faber Carpark D (17 lots) and Telok Blangah Hill Park Carpark 1 (17 lots) & Carpark 2 (total 39 lots)

I always wanted to visit the bridge after the opening, but didn't had the chance. Since my friend is driving, so we decided to drive up and take a look since it is also one of the best spots in Singapore to catch panoramic views of the city, harbour and the Southern Islands.

As the photos i took are not clear so i suggest you to go up and take a look at the bridge.

At night, the bridge will also dazzle with colour-changing LED lights. The lights display will be on between 7pm and 12am daily.

The respond for the robotic program this June holiday is quite bad. We only managed to get a few kids for the robotic class. This coming wednesday will have another class. Just hope to have more kids joining the program. (so that i can earn more... haha)

Someone stole mine 5 CK undies, 4 renoma undies, 1 C-IN undies, 2 shorts, 5 Tee shirts & a jacket..

OMG.... I am so sad now... all my fav t-shirts, polo tees, UNDIES are now all GONE... and it is with someone now.... That someone must be trying on my undies and tee shirt now... happily smiling with the new undies and tee shirts he received from ME.... Just over one night he received so many gifts. OH SHIT.....
